The Japanese use an ancient technique called “Shou sugi ban” to waterproof and preserve wood. May we present a modified version of it… the wood is Red Cedar (which is really a kind of cypress), we burn it with a torch (fires are banned for most of the dry season), and we seal it with a modern stain, rather than natural oil. But the results are amazing – if I say so myself. In the previous episode, we brought enough cedar shingles to experiment and test the process.
In this episode, we get SERIOUS! We figure out how many shingles we may roughly need to cover an area of roughly 500 square feet (about 46 square meters), and get to work on cladding our logcabin. FOLLOW ALONG!
